Second Main Topic
Topic Leader: @Ben Craker
The desired outcome is that the group discusses what if anything it would make sense for AgGateway to work on with regard to animal agriculture.
Pre-meeting notes and references:
Minutes:
Getting rations from a nutrition into mixing systems
Streamlining ingredients to feed manufacturer data exchange
ISO SAG livestock group
Livestock activities data management was an open space
Feeding, movement, diseases, etc.
No equivalent to “SPADE” for livestock
Gets a little difficult to manage depending on species, e.g a cow vs a flock of chicken
Need to exchange data between crop and livestock management systems
GHG re[porting and credits for diverting a product not fit for human consumption to animals, or utilizing manure instead of commercial fertilizer
Medications, using GLN, GTIN for reporting
May be an opportunity, Brent has done some work
By species would be
Beef, Dairy, and swine
EU regulations
Sustainability reporting
Pork checkoff built a tool to calculate
NHTC schedules slaughtering time frames based on different practices
Unfunded mandate, results in no ROI on the effort needed to switch practices at the processing plant
Likely need some sort of mechanism to easily/efficiently report on practices to be able to participate in export markets
For sustainability reporting at scale, likely need standards to make it economical to report the amount, or number or parameters to determine sustainability scores
Currently the market wants outcomes, but the producers are footing the bill without really being compensated
Three areas of interest
Feed, where is it procured from
Credit/documenting farms producing their own feed vs. trucking it in
Especially as operations are moving from their traditional locations to new areas of the country
Animal tracking, backgrounder → feedlot → processor etc.
Product methods, grass feed vs feedlot and how the situation changes for a given animal thought its lifecycle
Taking fuel out of beef, animals start in the north and move south, then sometimes come back slightly north
Should be areas of common interest across segments/animals
Feed, manure
decide Creating a advisory group on animal ag to meet one every month or two makes sense
Look into if there are other trade associations or other bodies we could talk to
Talk to AEM Diary group
