An inorganic gaseous compound containing one nitrogen atom and one oxygen atom. Nitric oxide is one of two oxides of nitrogen (NOx) that contribute to ozone and fine particulate matter formation. Nitric oxide is typically produced either as a product of combustion or as an intermediate product in denitrification.
