nitrosomonas

A genus of obligate aerobic chemo-autotrophic soil bacteria which oxidize NH4+ ions to NO2 in the first stage of the nitrification process. Nitrification inhibitors such as nitrapyrin specifically inhibit the activity of these organisms.
