ozone

A gas consisting of three oxygen atoms. Ozone if is found naturally in the upper atmosphere, where it filters potentially damaging ultraviolet light from reaching the Earth’s surface. Ground-level ozone is an air pollutant that is a component of smog and results in harmful health effects. Ground-level ozone is usually not emitted directly, but rather is formed through atmospheric reactions of oxides of nitrogen and volatile organic compounds in the presence of sunlight.
