net positive suction head
The head that causes liquid to flow through the suction piping and enter the eye of the pump impeller. REQUIRED net positive suction head (NPSH) is a function of the pump design and varies with the capacity and speed of the pump. It must be supplied by the manufacturer. AVAILABLE NPSH is a function of the system in which the pump operates and represents the energy level in the water over vapor pressure at the pump inlet. The available NPSH must equal or exceed the required NPSH or cavitation will occur.
