neutron probe, neutron gauge, neutron scattering device

A nondestructive method to measure soil water in situ. High-speed neutrons emitted from a radioactive source are slowed by interaction with various atomic nuclei (most effectively by hydrogen in the soil water). Slowed neutrons passing through a detector are counted electronically. The count rate can be related to soil water content through a calibration curve.
