Global Positioning System

This is the name of the satellite-navigation network that generate continuous signals identifying their positions and is maintained by the United States Department of Defense (US DoD); a radio navigation facility which consists of a network of satellites and earth stations that are controlled by the DoD to determine a radio receiver’s position in latitude, longitude and altitude. Electronic receivers on the ground use this information to locally calculate ground locations. Also, the term “GPS” is often treated more generically to refer to any device that depends on navigation satellites for functionality or for any coordinate values derived from such a device.
