carbon dioxide
An inorganic gaseous compound containing one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms. Carbon dioxide is an important greenhouse gas and is the principal anthropogenic greenhouse gas that affects the Earth’s radiative balance. Carbon dioxide is produced by all animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms during respiration and is used by plants during photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide is also generated as a natural by-product of the decomposition of organic matter and the combustion of fossil fuels or vegetative matter, among other chemical processes.
