Precipitation that has a low pH (less than 5.6, which is normal for “natural” precipitation). The precipitation becomes acidic when moisture in the air reacts with sulfur and nitrogen pollutants in the atmosphere. Acid rain has a harmful effect on some plants, aquatic organisms, soils, and buildings.
