A gas in the atmosphere that absorbs and re-emits longwave (typically infrared) radiation from the Earth’s surface, the atmosphere, and clouds (trapping heat). The three principal greenhouse gases that are associated with agricultural sources are carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide.
