GS1 (www.gs1.org), formerly known as the Uniform Commercial Council (UCC), is the not-for profit administrative and educational organization that works with U.S. and Canadian industry to develop and administer product identification and EDI standards; issues a UPC identification number to the owner/controller of a product label, i.e., a manufacturer, retailer, wholesaler, jobber, etc.; publishes all UPC technical specifications and guidelines; and educates the business community about the Universal Product Code.
