    Case Study promotion: ADAPT

    Identify needs:

    • PAIL
    • ADAPT
    • Traceability (incl. CART)
    • Other

Any PAC or general communications needs? Are there misunderstandings about AgGateway that our committee can help to alleviate with talking points or additional documents?

    (Hopefully) near future:

should have a final copy for the group to review later this week.ADAPT Toolkit flyer update (with AgGateway staff) -
    • discussed the new case study for ADAPT, just posted to the AgGateway website with communications kits. Other possibilities for PAC case studies:
should have a final copy for the group to review later this week.
  • Annual Meeting
    1. eBlast for Traceability sessions (discussed with AgGateway staff) - Went out today (10/23).
    2. eBlast for Mix Ticket session -Tie into other eBlast.
    3. eBlast for ADAPT session -Tie into other eBlast.
    4. ADAPT 'blurb' for AgGateway annual report (with ADAPT team for review/recommendation)
      1. Mark Stelford (Unlicensed) is reviewing. Use these stats: ISO plugins - 11 contributors, 179 software commits; ADAPT framework - 13 contributors, 530 software commits (thanks, R. Andres Ferreyra (Unlicensed)). Jessica Trites Rolle will send to Susan Ruland (Unlicensed).
  • ADAPT Logo
    1. The logo was discussed on the ADAPT Business call this morning (10/23). Ben Craker (Unlicensed) asked if AgGateway is allowed to use a service like 99designs to get a logo created quickly at a good price. Jim Wilson recommended that we stay with normal process for now. Will wait for Susan Ruland (Unlicensed) to complete annual report and other annual meeting work and get her guidance based on AgGateway media guidelines/rules.
    2. For the ASABE award application, the group noted we could use a 'diagram' or other graphic instead of a formal ADAPT 'logo.' R. Andres Ferreyra (Unlicensed) suggested using the Thrive article pic or ADAPT diagram. Ben Craker (Unlicensed) located the graphics and emailed links to Andres and Jessica for review. The group agreed using one of these graphics will give more time for thoughtful logo development.
  • PAIL updated flyer
      • to email Kasparbauer Randall D (Deactivated) about draft prepared last fall)
      • PICS project
      • Water management/PAIL - should be able to create one in 2019 as growers begin to prepare
    • Use template on the communications kit page for case studies (2-sided document)

    • Dan Berne (Unlicensed) - PAIL is creating implementation notes ala ADAPT and PICS. What is the consistent mechanism we can use for promoting all implementation notes? ADAPT notes are on the public ADAPT page and on the ADAPTframework.org site. Do similar for other notes. Also have a place under "Get Connected" for ADAPT and other key search/resource areas, could add a Precision Ag Tools (Resources?) area.
    • ACTION: Determine official way to publish and promo implementation notes for any project (PICS, PAIL, etc.)

and Dan Berne (Unlicensed) noted this is needed for annual meeting - due to Susan Ruland (Unlicensed) by mid-day Eastern US time Thursday 10/25.
  • Observations & Measurements new flyer (draft circulating)
    1. R. Andres Ferreyra (Unlicensed) and Dan Berne (Unlicensed) noted this is needed for annual meeting - due to Susan Ruland (Unlicensed) by mid-day Eastern US time Thursday 10/25.
  • Reference Data API slide deck, education (draft circulating)
    1. R. Andres Ferreyra (Unlicensed) and Dan Berne (Unlicensed) noted this is needed for annual meeting - due to Susan Ruland (Unlicensed) by mid-day Eastern US time Thursday 10/25.
  • PAIL - Needs immediately following annual meeting
    1. Charles Hillyer (Unlicensed) will be presenting a 1 hour talk about the technical aspects of PAIL at IAI in CA early December. R. Andres Ferreyra (Unlicensed) recommended that this group discuss communication needs at the October 30 PAC Communications call.
  • Updated PICS Implementation Guide - R. Andres Ferreyra (Unlicensed) will work on early next week. Once this is completed, the initial PICS project is finalized.
  • Need for annual meeting: "call to arms" for SPADE 4 (or equivalent) and PAIL 2, decisions on focus(es) for each project/set of projects.
    • raised an issue: crop data and poorly converted crop identification codes are a challenge to consistent implementation of AgGateway projects. R. Andres Ferreyra (Unlicensed) is drafting an implementation note for ADAPT for this problem.
    • This leads to another issue and decision point: how to we visually show the implementation notes are different from flyers. In other words, keep the AgGateway logo and tie to project or product, but have a visual cue that differentiates. Use branding guidelines (links to document on Communications Committee page resources).

6Onboarding / Member Engagement / PAC Goal Work
Communications WG activity for 2019 PAC Goals

    Onboarding:

Jessica Trites Rolle indicated new membership has slowed down the past few months.

    • There are SPADE2 and SPADE3 summary wiki pages. There's also a SPADE life cycle Jim Wilson and Jeremy started some time ago, working to tie all SPADE and related output (user stories, use cases, BPMN diagrams, etc.) into one large flow (doc might be 'global narrative'). The SPADE2 summary chart is most complete - good baseline.

    SPADE wrap-up:

  • Additional SPADE wrap-up work needed.

  • This group will re-visit the member engagement effort after annual meeting.
  • For discussion during future meeting - revisit member engagement for new and existing/lapsed members
    7Event Calendar and Speaking Engagements

    Review and update

    the

    : PAC Communications Calendar 2019.

    Review

    Identify upcoming speaking engagements and

    what

, if members are presenting or have a booth, determine communications items - flyers, etc. -

are needed. If new flyers, business cards, QR-code cards, etc., are needed, allow time to create/proof/print/deliver

    needed.

The group looked at the 2019 PAC Communications Calendar.

Discussed if should put copies of presentations at conferences on the calendar page or on the PAC communications presentations page. Group agreed to update the presentations page. Will also update to add missed 2018 presentations.

    8Holding Tank (
    activities
    items to consider
    and complete as needed
    in future)

    New flyers

    CART 2.0 PoCOther actions

    • Traceability Initiative & CART (streamline processes in farmer businesses)
    • Precision Ag Council general

Focus on outcomes in flyers (new, updated) and ensure a flyer or promo piece addresses why it’s OK to collaborate with competitors at AgGateway and what makes that acceptable (antitrust, etc.)

For flyers: Use diagrams and pics, not words (words mean something different to different people) – borrow from presentations (ADAPT, CART, traceability, etc.) and make into a professional graphic

    Other comm item/website considerations:

    • ADAPT materials: make sure they show how ADAPT works between ISO and other standards, that it’s a tool to translate and share and standardize, not a new separate standard.
    • Create a flyer or promo piece addresses why it’s OK to collaborate with competitors at AgGateway and what makes that acceptable (antitrust, etc.)
    • Business card-sized promo piece: ask a pain-point question on front, information and QR code on back
    • Identify audience: target flyers, messages to different groups; also have an overview all-audience flyer
    • Remove SPADE flyer from public website and rewrite as the project is closed out and published
    • Add a link to the AgGlossary on the AgGateway landing page (‘quick links’)
    • Case study: PICS study for Sensefly; ADAPT; PAIL; potential to do a pseudo-case-study on CART PoC?
    • Talk to new members: what pain points were they trying to solve that got them to join, and what collateral could we create to help others?

ASABE 2017: Sustainability, Provenance and ADAPT, Compound Identifiers. ASABE 2018: "Fit" paper (where does AgGateway "fit" into the standards space). Were not completed for conference papers, but could consider these journals for publication:

    • Computers & Electronics in Agriculture (ASABE journal) (no fee)
    • Applied Engineering in Agriculture (Elsevier journal) (fee)
    • There's also a Precision Ag journal, but the time frame from submission to publication is too long.

    No discussion

    .

    2/15

KEEP - As update/create flyers or other materials, consider (from 8/28/18 meeting discussion):

    Flyer format:

    need to ensure we use

    • Use A4 format for our flyers, include country codes flyer and card phone numbers and country on addresses, and make sure we're being international in all our press. Also be careful about colloquialisms.
    9New Business

    Discuss items not covered above.

Jessica Trites Rolle raised an ongoing concern about finding a way to get AgGateway's work (ADAPT, PAIL, ContextItem Systems, RDAPI, SPADE, other councils' messaging and other partner communication tools, AGIIS, etc) in front of new or expanding ag industry companies so those companies can build from a standards-based, flexible, agnostic, easy-to-use-to-share-clean-data platform rather than reinventing from the ground up. Want to have this as a 2019 goal - improve this communication, find the right audiences, and find ways to help increase connection by starting folks with 'easy to connect' tools.

Idea Jessica Trites Rolle and R. Andres Ferreyra (Unlicensed) discussed last week: get in front of VC and other ag startup funders to help them help their fundees save time and money and be better positioned to grow and connect to other platforms and share data - remove risks of 'boxing in' or 'siloing' after initial builds. New/expanding companies can build all the bells and whistles they want, and be innovative, but start with a flexible standards platform. Is this nuts? Been tried already? Jim Wilson said he's talked to VC funders in CA twice, and it's gone nowhere. He didn't set out to convince them to do what Jessica Trites Rolle mentioned, but they weren't interested in the 'standards' route - they want new, innovative, different, unique.

Jim Wilson recommended that now that the mergers are settling down, we might instead focus on our own member companies' R&D and funding divisions. Jessica Trites Rolle noted could also consider talking with funders in the Midwest.

Jim Wilson cautioned that we not spend too much time on something like this; good to educate and steer people to good solutions and best practices, but can't spend AgGateway volunteer or staff time stopping new companies from heading over a cliff; that's not our mission. Jessica Trites Rolle agreed - AgGateway is here to connect companies/partners, farmers/suppliers/providers, ensure clean consistent data, ensure data can be tracked and understood/translated, and strengthen all points along the supply chain up and down through the data.
    • Use diagrams and pics, not words (words mean something different to different people) – borrow from presentations (ADAPT, CART, traceability, etc.) and make into a professional graphic

    Flyer focus: OUTCOMES

    •  Updated OM flyer, and
    •  Updated RDAPI slide (will convert to a poster)
    •  If no further group comments by mid-day US time on Thursday, 10/25, R. Andres Ferreyra will send all to Susan Ruland (Unlicensed) for design and printing/posting for annual meeting.
    • email Kasparbauer Randall D (Deactivated) about draft ADAPT-John Deere case study drafted fall 2018 to determine if the document can be finalized and published this spring
    •  Group to consider between meetings, then continue discussion on:
      •  "Official" way to publish and promo implementation notes for any project (PICS, PAIL, etc.)
      •  "Official" way to show visual difference between implementation notes (how to use output from a project) and flyers (what the project or item is). Use branding guidelines (links to document on Communications Committee page resources).
    •  Traceability pitch for engaging food processors - Jessica Trites Rolle to work with Joe Tevis and others in the Traceability Provenance subgroup
