criteria air pollutants

The 1970 Clean Air Act (CAA) required Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to set National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for certain pollutants known to be harmful to human health. Using human health and welfare impacts of a pollutant as the “criteria” for regulation, EPA identified and set standards for six pollutants: ozone, carbon monoxide, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, lead, and nitrogen oxide.
