management zone
A management zone is a sub-region of a field or sub-field that expresses a relatively homogeneous combination of yield-limiting factors for which a single rate of a specific crop input is appropriate; a management zone is a method of classifying spatial variability within a field. A management zone is created by precision farming systems, some in real time, that utilize Variable Rate Technology (VRT) to vary the rates of crop inputs to meet site specific needs to support economic, performance, and environmental goals. Management zones generally conform to soil types or characteristics, but multiple management zones may exist to support the type of activity being performed within the management zone, i.e. crop practice (irrigated versus non-irrigated), planting rate, fertilizer rate, insecticide rate, fungicide rate, herbicide rate, etc. One or many management zones may exist within a common land unit identifier (CLUID) Globally Unique Identifier (GUID), but no management zone will exist outside of a CLUID (GUID). The intersection of the CLUID (GUID)and the change of rate, as identified by VRT, will identify a management zone. Each management zone will have a unique GIS boundary within the CLUID (GUID) and will collect data unique to the activity within the management zone. This data will be collected under the CLUID (GUID) within the Common Land Unit (CLU).
