latitude

Latitude measures how far north or south a point on the earth lies from the equator; latitude lines circle the globe in an east-west direction. It is a global standard coordinate used to identify a position on earth given in degrees, minutes and seconds, indicates the north/south position above/below the equator, positive is in the northern hemisphere and negative is in the southern hemisphere. The equator is at 0 degrees latitude and separates the earth into the northern and southern hemisphere. Locations north of the equator have latitude between 0 degrees and 90 degrees north; 90 degrees north is the North Pole. Locations south of the equator have latitude between 0 degrees and 90 degrees south; 90 degrees south is the South Pole.
