Calcium Carbonate Equivalent

Calcium Carbonate Equivalent (CCE) is a process used to quantify the quality of a liming material (neutralizing power per weight of material used) relative to pure CaCO3. Unlike manufactured fertilizers with a guaranteed analysis, ag lime is a natural product made from local limestone sources. Impurities in the limestone (determined by a laboratory process) vary by rock source and the processing by the local quarry. Further, the effective neutralizing value of the ag lime is also affected particle size, or finesses of grind, and by percent dry matter of the rock material. The size of particle influences how quickly the material will react to neutralize the soil acidity. Particle size is also a factor in spreading consistency for application of the liming product. Terminology used for lime recommendations may differ slightly by individual states, but the concept is similar. For example, Effective Calcium Carbonate Equivalent (ECCE) is used in Iowa. It represents the CCE value as the active material in a ton of lime rather than a percentage.
