riparian rights

Legal water rights of a person owning land containing or bordering on a water course or other body of water in or to its banks, bed, or waters. A legal principle holding that users of land adjoining a river have the rights to the water, as long as plenty of water is left for those downstream. Riparian water right is the right to use and control water by virtue of ownership of the banks.
