methane
A gaseous compound containing one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. Methane is a combustible greenhouse gas that is approximately 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide at warming the atmosphere. Methane is generated by the decomposition or conversion of carbon compounds in anaerobic conditions, such as in landfills, peat bogs, intestines (especially of ruminants), wetlands, and some manure management systems (anaerobic lagoons, anaerobic digesters, etc.).
