Temporary Assistance for Needy Families

A Federal-State, block-grant program that replaced the Aid to Families With Dependent Children program in 1996. TANF provides cash benefits to low-income families with children. Under TANF, States have flexibility to determine eligibility requirements and benefit levels, but benefits are subject to a 5-year Federal time limit and work requirements.
