cutthroat flume

Open-channel water flow measuring device that is part of a group of short-throated flumes that control discharge by achieving critical flow with curving streamlines through contraction. The flume is rectangular in cross section, has two main parts resembling a Parshall flume with the contracted throat removed or cut out (hence its name), and has a flat floor throughout. Calibrations depend on laboratory ratings.
