An optional unit is a further breakdown of a basic unit and is a crop that is planted within a section or Farm Serial Number or other recognized legal description system with section equivalents. An optional unit must meet the following criteria; 1) the crop is planted in a manner that results in a clear and discernible break in the planting pattern at the optional unit boundary, 2) the farmer has crop records of harvested, stored, and marketed crops for the land within the optional unit, and, if applicable, 3) the harvested records support an irrigated or non-irrigated crop practice. Exception- The Risk Management Agency (RMA) may allow optional units through a written agreement that modifies the above guidelines.
