Session 1

Stuart Rhea, Hiroyuki Morita, Daoud Urdu, RackWoo Kim, Roberto Garcia, Cale Boriack, Ben Craker, Mandar Godge

  • Review original goal based on SAG recommendation 3.4.3

    • Review and validate use cases

    • Identify gaps in AgGateway model and refine acordingly

    • Look for regional/international/industry controlled vocabularies that could be applicable

    • Consider technical requirements for industry wide semantic resource to house and administer the vocabularies

      • Have not really discussed this point much to-date

    • Goal to have this done and report at the Berlin plenary in March

      • Propose NWIP at the meeting with “Form 4”

      • Most important parts for group to review are:

        • Scope

        • Purpose/Justification

      • Plan to start today and formally submit 2 weeks before plenary so there is a chance for the broader TC to review and have an informed discussion at the plenary

  • Review existing work

    • There are a lot of contexts for use of the term crop, making automation of some processes difficult

      • e.g. how to automate what products are available to use for a particular crop in a field

        • How and why something is being group is different than what is being grown but all related

    • Crop refinement types

      • The types will likely be an emergent property of encoding crops this way

        • e.g. color, harness, growing season (hard/soft, red/white, spring/winter wheat)

        • Have some experiences with these types of refinements, but are done in a specific context so (modeling) decisions are able to be made

      • There are often “traps” that render these types of structures unreliable, or difficult to use

      • The general concept seems to be sound, but need to get into specifics outside the simple wheat examples

      • Support for using existing standards or conto9rlled vocabularies

        • e.g. EPPO is a good resource even if there are occasional gaps, and they are open to adding to the list and have a friendly license (now)

    • Recap existing use cases, still have some gaps for processors, CPG end of the chain

      • Any other uses cases that highlight the need for the crop definitions for the purpose on form 4

        • (EU) Environmental reporting, connection of agricultural databases to food databases

          • Agree there is likely something there but need a subject matter expert to help out

            • Need examples on how generality/specificity of crop definition creates issues

            • In international trade pallets of fruits for example need to have some sort of identifier

            • Does anyone care what specific variety of fruit is in the pallet?

            • Daoud will make a first draft of a use case in this area

  • Homework is to write something on the Scope, purpose/justification and email it to Stuart
  • Stuart will combine and send out to get through at least one edit cycle prior to submitting to TC
